Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and creates relaxation. Swedish massage employs five different movements: long, gliding strokes, kneading of individual muscles, friction, hacking or tapping, and vibration.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points are tender areas usually found in tight muscles. They may radiate, or refer, pain to other areas of the body. They can also cause muscle weakness or restricted range of motion. Trigger points can result from a number of causes, including direct trauma, exposure to cold, and overuse of a muscle group. Neuromuscular massage is a manual system of working with trigger points.
Reflexology is the application of pressure, stretch and movement to the feet and hands to effect corresponding parts of the body. Reflexologists view the feet and hands as a mirror image of the body. By applying technique, a reflexologist can break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body. One hour reflexology sessions will include an exfoliating foot scrub and soak with essential oils while 30 and 45 minute sessions are reflexology only.
Myofascial Release Therapy
A gentle therapy, consisting of a mixture of light stretching and massage work. During a session, the therapist will apply hands-on massage strokes in order to release tension from the fibrous bands of the muscles, bones, nerves and joints, by unblocking any scar tissue or adhesions due to injury in the muscles and surrounding tissues.
True Deep Tissue massage can be one of the most therapeutic and healing massages. Although not as rhythmic as other massage types, deep tissue massage interacts the most with body’s muscles and muscle groups. After a deep tissue massage, sore and tired muscles often become revived and energized. The body often feels as if it had a strenuous, yet impactful workout.
Sports massage is perfect for a very active or athletic individual who seeks a muscle intensive massage modality. Sports massage concentrates more on specific areas of the body and is ideal for recreational lifestyles to help relieve discomfort or pain from over-activity.
Through suction, the skin is gently drawn upwards by creating a vacuum in a cup over the target area of the skin. The cup stays in place for five to fifteen minutes. It helps treat pain, deep scar tissue, connective tissue, and muscle knots.
Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils that are usually mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond, apricot kernel, or grape seed oil. The therapist uses up to five oils in a mixture, and chooses the oils based on what you need. A relaxing aromatherapy massage, for instance, might have lavender or bergamot, while a massage for sore muscles might include peppermint and eucalyptus. If you enjoy essential oils, Sarah Thomas is also a Young Living Essential Oils Distributor.
